LAKE COUNTY
As part of the larger North Coast AVA, Lake County lies north of Napa and Sonoma counties and east of Mendocino County. It is nestled between The Vaca and Mayacamas mountain ranges, overlooking Clear Lake, the largest natural lake in California and one of the oldest lakes in North America. With more than 8,500 acres planted to vine, the Lake County AVA is best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon.
Grapes are planted throughout Lake County, both on the valley floor, which rests alongside Clear Lake at 1,370
feet, and in the mountaintop vineyards at 2,000 feet.
Cabernet grapes thrive in the red volcanic soil near Mt. Konocti, a dormant volcano, where cooler winters mean
a later start to the growing season. The region's high-
elevation vineyards bask in abundant sunlight during
the warm summer months, giving the grapes intense
color and flavor. Our winemakers use Lake County
grapes to bring a touch of dried herb flavor to our
Ghost Pines Cabernet Sauvignon.
